JIM ARMSTEAD, PhD, LL.D., J.D. a retired professor of strategy at the US Naval War College, comes to us from the University of California where he teaches international law, jurisprudence and comparative law. His Chautauqua experience includes performances as the Rt. Reverend Lemuel Haynes, a Revolutionary Minuteman and best selling author from Connecticut, York of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Lt. Henry Flipper, Buffalo Soldier and engineer, Dr. Booker T. Washington, founder and President of Tuskegee Institute, General Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., Commander of the Tuskegee Airmen and of course mountain man and explorer James Pierson Beckwourth which he brings to South Carolina this year, Jim has entertained Chautauqua audiences in Nevada, California, Maryland and Arkansas since 1994.

GEORGE FREIN, PH.D, who will portray John James Audubon, was Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Religion at the University of North Dakota and adjunct Professor of Religion at Furman University. He is the Artistic Director of the Greenville Chautauqua Society. George has been performing in summertime Chautauquas for the past 20 seasons. This is his tenth season with Chautauqua in the Carolinas. He has portrayed Mark Twain, Herman Melville, John Adams, Henry Adams, Abraham Lincoln, John Winthrop and Dr.Seuss. George lives in Greenville with his wife Shelly, New Testament professor at Furman and their two children: Nathan and Alice.

WILL MOREAU GOINS,PhD a historic preservationist, published author, communications professional and community leader will portray Black Elk. Dr. Goins presently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Cherokee Indian Tribe of South Carolina, Inc. (ECSIUT) a "State recognized" statewide tribal organization. Dr. Goins is a descendant of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and CEO of the Eastern Cherokee, Southern Iroquois & United Tribes of South Carolina, Inc. Will is a Native American storyteller, folklorist, cultural presenter, chanter-singer, dancer, artist, educator, and arts administrator. His B.A. is in Communications and his Ph.D. is in Anthropology from Penn. State University. Dr. Goins is a member Speaker's Bureau of the Humanities Council SC. In Chautauqua 2006 Dr. Goins portrayed the Cherokee, Sequoyah.

CAROLINE McINTYRE, MA, who portrays Rachel Carson, is a nine-year veteran of Greenville Chautauqua. She graduated Bucknell University with distinction and membership in Phi Alpha Theta, national history honorary society, and holds an MA from New York University, both degrees in American Studies. Caroline performed as SW Virginia frontierswoman Mary Draper Ingles in Chautauqua 2006. She first taught Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" to high school students in 1970 -- the year of the first Earth Day. Both Rachel Carson and Carolines mother, Dolly McIntyre a veteran Chautauqua performer of the 1930's, were born in May 1907. Researching Rachel Carson has brought Caroline closer to her own family history.

JOSEPH T. STUKES, PhD. Joel R. Poinsett, Dr. Stukes' twelfth South Carolinian, will be performed for the first time in 2008. Born in South Carolina, Dr. Stukes taught history for 42 years from high school through graduate school. Author of many articles and professional papers, for fifteen years he wrote a weekly newspaper column 'History Lesson' emphasizing the effective combination of biography and history. Dr. Stukes has held professorial and administrative positions in several academic institutions, including Visiting professorships at such as the University of Chattanooga, Southern Illinois, St. Lewis and Franklin College in Lugano, Switzerland. He has received several awards and recognitions, scholarships and lectureships in his name at Erskine College and Francis Marion University. Dr. Stukes has portrayed many historical characters, including appearances with Greenville Chautauqua as Henry Laurens, Andrew Carnegie, John C. Calhoun, and Eugene Debs. He has received special awards for characterizing Theodore Roosevelt, Robert E. Lee, Douglas MacArthur and Francis Marion. Dr. Stukes hosts the 'Joe Stukes History Series' presented six times a year at the Florence County Library. In addition, he continues to organize, plan and lead traveling seminars in Western Europe annually, combining scenic touring with historical learning.

D. JEROME TWETON, PhD, is Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of History, emeritus, from the University of North Dakota, and is senior consultant to the North Dakota Humanities Council. He has studied and written about Theodore Roosevelt since the 1960's. He was the first scholar to develop a Chautauqua character -- Theodore Roosevelt in 1977. Between 2002 and 2006 he interpreted John Jacob Astor for the Great Plains Chautauqua Society. Currently, he is senior consultant to the North Dakota Humanities Council. He lives in Fessenden, North Dakota, where his wife, Paula, runs the Beiseker mansion bed and Breakfast. (Jerry is in charge of changing light bulbs).
